Chimpanzee tracking, canopy suspension bridges, and hidden waterfalls await discovery

Tucked into Rwanda’s southwest corner, Nyungwe Forest is an ancient high-altitude rainforest that stretches across ridges and valleys near the borders of Burundi and DR Congo.

Cloaked in mist and strung with vines, it rolls across hills and ravines at the headwaters of both the Nile and the Congo River. This is one of the oldest forests in Africa, dating back to the last Ice Age. Its layered canopies, tangled lianas and grand mossy trunks award the environment a dense, almost primaeval presence that emanates aliveness in every possible direction.

Step into the trees and the forest comes alive – Nyungwe’s biodiversity is astounding. Thirteen primate species swing and chatter through the branches, from chimpanzees to massive troops of Ruwenzori colobus monkeys. Over 300 bird species flit through the mist, some found nowhere else on Earth, like the great blue turaco and the inquisitive Rwenzori batis. Even the forest floor buzzes with life: rare orchids, kaleidoscopic butterflies and frogs with high-pitched melodies add their merriment to the landscape.

Experiences here lean into the lushness. Visitors can track chimps at dawn, tiptoe across a suspended canopy walkway or follow a ranger to hidden waterfalls. Lodges here melt into the forest like well-kept secrets with room service, offering comfort and solace amongst the forest’s stirrings.
