A lake of shifting shores and surreal pink horizons
Lake Nakuru is a shallow, alkaline lake nestled in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Formed by ancient volcanic eruptions and tectonic shifts, the valley cradles the lake in a basin of crumbled lava and mineral-rich soil. Fringed by acacia woodlands and grassy plains inside Lake Nakuru National Park, the lake swells and shrinks with the rains, its shifting edges and colours drawing in a curious cast of wildlife – Nakuru is a photographer’s paradise.
Flamingos are the region’s unofficial mascots. Thousands flock here when algae blooms, transforming the lake’s edge into a fluttering haze of striking pink. But it’s not just about the reserve’s 400 bird species. This compact park is one of Kenya’s best spots to see both black and white rhinos,roaming the park’s safe havens. Rothschild’s giraffes, a rare subspecies, can be spotted gracefully roaming the woodlands. Nakuru lions here are known for their surprising tree climbing habit, lounging on branches high above the ground, apparently to escape biting flies operating at ground level.
Despite its small size, Nakuru delivers dense sightings and varied terrain. Lakeshores, waterfalls, open savannahs and bushy hills create a wild arena that supports rich life.
