Cradled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara glistens between sheer cliffs and wide skies. Here, five distinct ecosystems exist. This alkaline lake and its surroundings form a surprisingly diverse pocket of wilderness, shifting from leafy groundwater forest to grassy floodplains. Fed by subterranean springs and rimmed with alkaline shallows, the landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, drawing in waves of migrating birds and shifting game. Beyond the national park’s borders, the region spills into Masai homelands and fertile highlands, where banana groves and verdant coffee farms intricately climb the hillsides.
