Zambia’s Lower Zambezi region is a place where nature takes over in full. This vast valley stretches along the northwestern bank of the Zambezi River, the fourth-longest river in Africa, flowing from Zambia’s interior to the Indian Ocean. Here, the river unspools between escarpments and floodplains, carving out oxbow lagoons and sandbanks as it goes. Across the water lies Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools, forming a rare cross-border wilderness where wildlife roams freely. In the dry season, the floodplains reveal stunning forests of Ana trees where the dust and sun filter through to bathe pod-seeking elephants, screeching baboons and relaxed leopards in a unique blue-orange light.

Life here flourishes in the in-between where water meets land. Elephant cross the river with trunks held high while leopard observe from the shadows or limbs. Massive packs of wild dogs hunt the floodplains, causing chaos while buffalo stir dust across the floodplains , and bee-eaters flash through the riverbanks. Sausage trees drop weighty pods, and antelopes pick through the ground with precision. Along the channels, myriad birds – carmine bee-eaters, egrets, fish eagles and African skimmers turn the air electric.

Lower Zambezi offers an array of safari activities on land and water in addition to traditional game drives.
