Over 5 million years ago, Lake Makgadikgadi stretched expansively across northern Botswana. Today, one of the world’s largest salt pan systems is left in its ancient wake. This salt-encrusted earth is hauntingly arid during the dry season. A surreal sight to behold that emanates otherworldly energy. After the rains arrive, shallow water returns, summoning temporary wetlands where wildlife suddenly thrives.
Herds of zebras enter the region in the thousands, creating the second-largest zebra migration in Africa. Visitors watch in awe as they assemble in abundance to feast on mineral-rich grasses. Thousands of flamingos join the gathering too, setting the sky aflame in pink. Meerkats famously find home in patches of scrub on the bush-dotted edges of the pans.
