Home to the great migration and to nature at full volume
In southwestern Kenya, the Masai Mara unfolds in a patchwork of tawny plains, flat-topped desert date trees , kopjes and croton thickets. The spectacular Mara River, home to watchful crocodiles and countless hippos, twists through tangled riverine forest whilst granite inselbergs rise like ancient islands in vast seas of grass. Nestled along Kenya’s border with Tanzania, the Masai Mara forms the northern reach of the greater Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. This is the staggering, transboundary wilderness that sets the stage for the largest land-based mammal migration on earth.
The Mara is a year-round destination. The green season (November to June) offers peace, vista and intimacy – leopards drape themselves across fig branches, elephants roam the floodplains and hippos wallow noisily in the river’s muddy edges and giant herds of buffalo grass the tall grasses, always on the look out for the resident lion prides. Every year from July to October, over a million wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle flood into the Mara, drawn by fresh grass stirred to life by seasonal rains. Waiting for the herds of prey are territorial lions, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas. When the migration arrives, the mara erupts into a symphony of wildlife.
This is ‘Out of Africa’ country – every glance holds a new thrill as over 450 birds fill the skies and a smorgasbord of life thrives in the plains below. Guests explore the reserve on expertly guided game drives and enrich their experiences with visits to Maasai homesteads, unveiling local culture. At exclusive safari camps, guests savour handcrafted elegance and modern amenities framed by panoramic vistas of drifting elephants and distant kopjes.
