Where the Okavango breathes into desert sand, life surges up in return.
In the centre of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve protects one of Earth’s rarest ecosystems, an inland delta that never reaches the sea. Instead, the Okavango River spills into Kalahari Desert sands. The result? An exuberant world that brims with lagoons, floodplains, islands and woodlands. Moremi is the only part of this watery wilderness that is officially protected. Often deemed as ‘the jewel of the delta’, it holds a fascinating array of life that mingles on land and in water.
What sets Moremi apart isn’t just its diverse beauty. In 1963, the BaTawana people set aside this land, making it the first reserve in Africa established by local communities. Their decision created a legacy of protection that continues today. The wildlife here is vibrant and dynamic. As the floodwaters arrive each year, animals from drier regions are drawn to the wetlands. Wild dogs, now endangered elsewhere, thrive in this environment. Members of The Big Five are frequently seen relishing in the reserve’s varied habitats. Birdwatchers are spoiled for sightings, with over 500 species filling the skies.
Visitors come for the promise of wilderness and they discover it in abundance. Mokoro trips and game drives show enthused spectators the intricacies of the delta. Lodges here perfect calm comfort with many perching at the water’s edge, where hippos grunt and herons hunt.
