Africas vast sanctuary stitched by river channels and savannah

Nyerere National Park, once part of the enormous Selous Game Reserve, sprawls across a corner of southeastern Tanzania that feels entirely its own. Covering more than 30,000 square kilometres, it lies south of the Rufiji River, which slices the park into resurgent wetlands, sandbanks, oxbow lakes, and carving channels. The river is the park’s sculptor, engineering a dynamic landscape that shifts with the seasons. Floodplains soak and dry in tune with the rains, while clusters of doum palms and borassus trees rise like earth-born columns across open grasslands and mopane woodlands. It’s one of Africa’s largest protected areas, and among its most ecologically varied.

Nyerere hosts Tanzania’s largest elephant population and one of the last strongholds for endangered African wild dog. Giraffe browse flooded plains while lions sprawl in the shade of sausage trees. Rufiji’s backwaters heave with hippo and crocodile, and birdlife flourishes in every direction with over 440 species, including rare Pel’s fishing owl and flocks of spoonbills. The flora transforms with the terrain, from palm-fringe riverbanks to sparse savannah woodland.

This is the kind of place where your morning coffee comes with elephants and your evening gin with hippos. Boat safaris float between croc-eyed sandbanks, while walking safaris give you the bush at eye level. Game drives roll over ridges and river loops. Nights wind down in stylish camps tucked into the trees, equal parts barefoot-luxury and bush spectacle.
