Whilst most rivers eventually spill into the ocean, the Okavango ventures towards the desert. Rain gathered from Angola’s tall peaks travels for months before reaching the delta. When the land welcomes the river water, Botswana’s dry season erupts into splendour. Smaller rivers, swamps, wetlands and islands take over this portion of the Kalahari, forming the Okavango Delta. This rare oasis breathes life into the desert, offering a home to a tremendous variety of species. In flood season the ever-dynamic delta expands to cover over 15, 000 square kilometers. A UNESCO World Heritage sight, it is revered as one of the most pristine wetland ecosystems on earth.
This is where nature’s remarkable adaptability reveals its talent. Lions of the region succumb to semi-aquatic strategies- one of the only (regularly) swimming lion populations in the world. Leopards stalk through shallow channels before dragging their kills to the refuge of jackalberry trees. Both elephants and hippos move through the delta determinedly, creating vital channels so vast that they appear visible from airplanes. Lechwe antelope thrive on marshy grounds in abundance. With such a stark concentration of species, the delta reveals the spectacle of intense predator dynamics.
