A legendary curtain of thunder and spray that has shaken souls for centuries
Victoria Falls sits on the seam between Zimbabwe and Zambia, where the Zambezi River crashes into a precipitous gorge, sending up a spray so dense it’s visible from 30 kilometres away. Locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders. It is not just a waterfall but a colossal rupture in the earth, with basalt cliffs, forested islands and deep zigzagging gorges carved by centuries of cascading water. In flood season, more than 500 million litres pour over the edge each minute- a sight to behold.
Beyond the falls, the surrounding national parks on both sides offer a strikingly diverse mix of life. Rainforest clings to the spray zone with rare palm species, ferns and wild orchids thriving in the mist. Elephants migrate through the riverine forest, bushbuck skirt the fringes of the gorge and baboons patrol the walkways. Birders come for trumpeter hornbills and shy African fin foots while the river hosts crocodiles, hippos and tiger fish.
Here, adventure tilts in every direction. The world’s best whitewater rafting dives straight into the gorge’s teeth – as does bungee jumping off the old railway bridge. Helicopters circle the spray. On foot, you can walk the edge of thunder. Sunset cruises offer another mood entirely, gliding past kingfishers and hippos. Lodges come dressed in riverside splendour or tucked away where monkeys stir the trees.
On the Zimbawean side, the town of Victoria Falls, offers a variety of splendid accommodation including the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel. The Zambian side of the river has a number of quaint, lovely lodges dotted along the banks towards the bustling town of Livingstone upstream. Victoria Falls is a classic, but it never stands still.
