Spice-scented shores and coral-wrapped coastlines

Zanzibar drifts just off mainland Tanzania, a low-lying archipelago wrapped in reef and tide. Unguja, the main island, is ringed with powder-white beaches and tranquil-toned lagoons, while its interior boasts flourishing spice plantations and coconut groves.

Stone Town’s coral-rag buildings and winding alleys tell stories of trade and migration, while just beyond the city, warm shallows lap against rocky shores. The land is flat and fertile, stitched with spice farms that fill the air with scents of cloves, nutmeg and vanilla. Zanzibar’s position along historic trade routes has created a cultural blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian and European influences, making it feel like nowhere else on the continent.

The archipelago has its own cast of creatures. Endemic and endangered, the Zanzibar red colobus monkey is found only in Jozani Forest, where mangrove boardwalks and ancient mahogany trees shelter duikers and bush babies. Offshore, bottlenose dolphins skim the waves and green turtles graze on seagrass beds. Kaleidoscopic coral reefs host butterflyfish, lionfish and octopus, with occasional glimpses of whale sharks.

Days here unfold through snorkelling, forest walks, sea safaris and wandering old spice routes. Whether visitors opt for barefoot luxury villas tucked into palm groves or rooftop suites overlooking the sea, the island offers a stylish, sensory escape with a strong coastal soul.
