Murchison Falls blends explosive geography with a living, breathing wilderness
Murchison Falls sits at the point where the Nile River is forced through a six-metre gap in the rock and explodes into a powerful waterfall. Here lies Uganda’s largest and oldest national park, with a layered geography that stretches from savannah plains to dense woodland along the Nile’s twisting course. To the south, the land rises into sweeping hills dotted with borassus palms. To the north, vast grasslands unfurl beneath the sky. At the centre of it all is the falls itself, a natural pressure valve that turns the calm Nile into a spectacle of thunderous flow.
Here, wildlife feels both epic and intimate. Visitors can spot Rothschild’s giraffe moving idly across the northern banks, patas monkey bounding through the dry grasses and huge Nile crocodiles warming themselves along the shoreline. Hippo float in pods, watching with bulbous eyes, and shoebills lurk in the shallow swamps. This is one of the few places where you can enjoy savannah species (lion, buffalo and leopard to name a few) on one side of the river and forest dwellers on the other. The diversity is a result of the varied terrain, and it makes each game drive or boat trip feel fresh and unexpected.
It’s possible to explore by boat, game drive or on foot with expert guides who know where the wildlife lingers. Each luxury stay is stitched into the scenery, river-lulled, bird-woken, and never far from the action.
